A legacy of style.
For over 150 years, Smith Tompkins has furnished homes for beautiful living.
Founded as a furniture seller in the bustling small city of Torrington, Connecticut, Smith Tompkins became Litchfield County’s premier destination for home decor. Its departments ranged from mid-century modern and contemporary designs to The Colonial Shop, featuring pieces by the Hitchcock Chair Co. Art offerings included high-end prints and reproductions.
Today, the Smith Tompkins tradition lives on as a gallerist of fine art and photography.
The artists.
Jonathan Gyurko (American, b. 1974) was trained from an early age in scenic design. His acrylic paintings reflect the minimalism and colors often found on stage, in large works viewed from a distance. He later worked with watercolors while teaching art in rural South Africa. Unsatisfied with the logic of where a brushstroke starts and ends, he developed a signature “infinity” technique in which a single daub envelopes itself and is tiled over the next. Vintage frames often inspire the piece.
William Gyurko (American, b. 2003) is an award winning photographer who took his first picture at age three. His unique gaze finds the harmony in everyday objects and settings, and he works with a variety of cameras and films. From 2023 to 2025 he was president of the St Andrews Photography Society (Scotland).
